About Terrance "Bro Mac" McElroy

Born and raised in New York City, attended East New York Tech Voc. H.S., for Jet engines and aircraft maintenance.

Retired Deputy Supt. Of Security Maximum Security Prisons New York State 34 years. 25 years at Sing Sing Prison and retired from Bedford Hills Corr. Fac., a Maximum-Security Prison for Women 2006.

Served in Viet Nam, U.S. Army Veteran, Spec/ 5, 227th First Calvary Division

Member of Hollywood Rotary, Dania Beach Lions Club, member of the Hollywood and Dania Beach Chamber of Commerce, a Minister at Lighthouse Community Church, in Dania Beach. Rotary, Early-Act Chairperson

As a retired Deputy Superintendent for Maximum Security Prisons in New York State, I know firsthand the consequences of students who do not get a high school diploma. 80 % of the students who do not complete high school wind up in Maximum Security Prisons.

Data from Third Grade Reading Legislation (4/16/2019) has shown that students not reading proficiency at the end of the third grade are four times more likely not to finish high school. A sad fact is that the private prison industry builds jail cells based on this data.

Lighthouse4students.Inc since its inception has grown from the adoption of one Public School in 2018 to five in 2022. Lighthouse4students has been nominated and awarded Outstanding Community Youth Mentoring Program of the Year by Broward County Schools 2018/2019, by Dania Elementary and nominated again for Outstanding Community Youth Mentoring Program of the Year for Broward County Schools by Pines Middle School 2019/2020. Lighthouse4students recently was nominated in 2023 for the Outstanding Family and Community Engagement Award Broward County Public Schools for our efforts in raising math and reading scores in the community.

I am a firm believer that education is one of the keys and most reliable routes out of poverty. Low reading /math scores have unintended consequences and long-term outcomes, affecting a student’s economic and social position later in life. Data from the Nations Report Card Center by States shows a continuing decline in reading scores across the country. Covid and Lockdowns have made it worst. Current statistics show that our country’s math/reading scores are the worst scores recorded in the past 50 years. Programs like Lighthouse4students and Rotary Early Act are making a difference. Nine out of ten students enrolled in our programs show improvement in academic reading and math scores.
