Current & Past Projects

Rotary Club members Julia Beren-Sosnick, Dr. Shantell Haynes-Leon, Avra Glicksman, and Marguerite Howden-Goulet got together today to put together bedding and hygiene kits for residents at Haynes Harbour, Inc. This project is one of our district grants where the money raised by our club is doubled through the grant. Residents will receive all of the items packaged today including a bed & mattress. Thank you to the staff at GELC (Gulfstream Early Learning Center) for providing a great space for our work. Thank you to all the members of our club for your contributions.

AGUA CALIENTE
Funds for this GG were electronically transferred on December 24, 2020 from The Rotary Foundation to the bank account in Guatemala established by our “Host” Rotary Club of La Antigua. Construction has been on-going, and the following is a summary of completed operations as of the end of March:

• The water collection boxes were built and are completed now.
• 3 aerial pipe systems have been installed, necessary to support the water line over deep ravines.
• 2 reinforced concrete tanks of 150,000 liters are under construction (39,625 gallons).
• Constant supervision of the work by the ABPD engineer.
• Trainings for both adults and children in hygiene and water use.
• Gray water filters are under construction.
• Water has been pumped into the new distribution tank, but not yet piped to the households.

PAXOROTOT
Funds to cover the GG have been contributed, mailed to The Rotary Foundation, and have been transferred to the RC of La Antigua. Due to a severe shortage of PVC piping, the purchase of these items has been on an extremely limited basis. As construction proceeds, further progress reports will be sent. The photo below shows members of the village Water Committee participate in the “first rock ceremony” which signifies the start of the project and is comparable to a “groundbreaking ceremony” in the USA. The other photos show the leveling of the land where the reinforced concrete distribution tank will be located.

XETONOX, COMALAPA - Global Grant #2122094 R/Y 2021-2022
Our 11th Global Grant has been submitted, reviewed and approved by TRF, designated for this village. Funding will be requested from clubs starting after July 1, 2021 since this GG has been designated for Rotary Year 2021-2022.

The Rotary Club of Hallandale Beach-Aventura owns the Santa's Sleigh trailer float that it has used every Christmas Eve for the past 50+ years to spread goodwill and holiday cheer to the citizens of Hallandale Beach. Each year dedicated Rotarians dust off the Santa's Sleigh, make necessary repairs, get together to prepare treats for Santa to give out to eager children, and send the sleigh around town with Santa and his helpers and goodies in tow! Some parents arrange with Santa in advance for the special delivery of gifts too! The City of Hallandale Beach also uses the float for a separate holiday event in the city.

Because the City of Hallandale Beach sold the property that provided storage for our 40’ container that houses our Santa's Sleigh trailer, we were seeking a new storage place for several months with no luck. Now we had reached the nth hour with threats of towing and impound.

This year we have developed a partnership between our Rotary Club and the staff at The Gulfstream Early Childhood Center. I asked Fran Markowitz, our club Secretary to quickly craft a letter in this nth hour appealing to Dr. Lori Canning to assist us with a place to put our Santa's Sleigh. As luck would have it, a place was found! Thanks to Dr. Canning and Christine Moss, Director of the Center.

Now to coordinate moving the container with the sleigh! Hector Miranda, our member that is the custodian of the sleigh, was out of the country. He had arranged for Blueline Containers to move the container, but he did not know they could not move it with the sleigh inside! So now we had to find someone that had a vehicle and the skills to move the sleigh! All the while the City is tapping their fingers on the desk because the deadline is approaching. The only person we could find with a vehicle and the skills was not available during the hours necessary to make the move. Our Secretary Fran Markowitz gave me Cathie Schanz’s phone number. Cathie Schanz is the Director of The City of Hallandale Beach Parks and Recreation. Now here is our hero! Cathie agreed to enlist Joe Tullis to move the sleigh!!! Joe is the city employee that is the custodian of the Santa's Sleigh for the city holiday event, so I knew the Santa's Sleigh was in good hands! That's how Santa's Sleigh was saved this July!!

Watch for us in December – Santa will return to visit Hallandale Beach!
