About Dan McCarthy

A native of Auburn Hills, Michigan, Dan earned a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from Oakland University and a Master’s in Business Management from the Naval Postgraduate School. He also holds a Presidential Honorary Degree from West Virginia University.

Professionally Dan completed a 38 year career as a logistician in the United States Navy and retired from military service as a Vice Admiral and head of logistics for the U.S. Navy in the Pentagon. He went on to head a successful business and leadership consulting business during which he taught in the Executive Education programs of three major universities.

A lifelong Scout leader, Dan came to West Virginia in 2012 when he was asked to oversee final construction, program development and opening of the Summit Bechtel Family National Scout Reserve, the home of National Scout Jamborees and a year-round high adventure program. Retiring from this position in 2017, Dan and his wife Carol have made West Virginia their home where he remains involved in Scouting, in support of economic development in the State, as a Board member of the West Virginia Humanities Council and as an Advisory Council member in support of the business school of West Virginia University.

Dan first joined Rotary in 1992 in Athens, Georgia. He became a member of the Rotary Club of Beckley when he arrived in West Virginia and served as its President in 2019-2020. Dan served as District Governor for Rotary International District 7545 (serving the 53 Rotary Clubs of West Virginia serving all but the eastern panhandle) during the 2022-23 Rotary year. He was asked to extend his leadership of the district to a second year, a role in which he is now serving.

Dan is married to Carol McCarthy, an equally avid Scout leader and Rotarian. They have three Eagle Scout sons, all with successful careers in their own right.
