Meeting: February 12, 2020

Our Club has been a supporter for the past 3 years. Our member, Julia Beren-Sosnick brought this cause to our club. The Symphony in the Schools Program started in 1997 in Monroe County by Maestra Sabrina Alfonso, bringing free educational symphonic concerts to local schoolchildren giving them the opportunity to experience the symphony orchestra for the first time. The program has served over 85,000 students since its inception. In the 2018-2019 school year, over 5500 children attended a free Symphony in the Schools, multimedia-infused concert in Broward, Miami-Dade, and Monroe Counties. The total impact for 2019-2020, with only 2 months into the new year, was 6500. Here is a link to a short video about the program Symphony in the Schools.

Julia Beren-Sosnick is our club Chair of the "Art for the Arts" Fundraisers that have been held at Color Me Mine Studio in Hallandale Beach. The Fundraisers generated funds that have been matched by a Rotary District Grant. The grant funded the printing of the workbooks for students that participated in the Symphony in the Schools program in 2019-2020. Look for our upcoming annual Art for the Arts event in the Fall!

We hope to work with other Rotary Clubs to raise their awareness level of the Symphony in the Schools Program for fundraisers and to apply for a Global Grant. Now we want to take this program into the “new world” of Virtual! For many children, the symphony experience opens new worlds of learning. Most students have never attended a symphony concert or listen to classical music. We are very passionate about the potential to bring this wonderful program to many classrooms all over the world!
