SAT., MAY 10TH - SHARE COMMITTEE ROTARY CLUB OF HALLANDALE BEACH-AVENTURA |
---|
The Hallandale Beach-Aventura Rotary Club is a proud member of the SHARE Committee.
What is SHARE? The purpose of this Committee is to scrutinize the District Grants' applications that have been submitted and make sure they meet all the criteria.
Once it is determined a Grant had fulfilled all the requirements for District Grants, they are included in the Spending Plan to be submitted to the Rotary Foundation for approval.
On Saturday, May 10, 2025, we worked for hours on this important endeavor together with other dedicated Rotarians. Alejandro Cascarano and Club President Evelyn Trinidad-Toraño represented our Club this year.
WED., MAY 14TH @ 12:30 PM-2:00 PM - HYBRID CLUB MEETING GUEST SPEAKER: ANTHONY J. ABBATE |
---|
On our May 14, 2025, meeting we were privileged to have Anthony Abbate as a speaker. A member of the Fort Lauderdale Rotary Club, Anthony is an Architect, Professor, and Director of the MetroLab at Florida Atlantic University, among his many impressive accomplishments.
He came to our meeting with his adorable wife Jaye, and FAU student, Zachary Baril who was part of the Lakhaya Bridge Team.
In conjunction with FAU, several outstanding sponsors, including Rotary International, and with the participation of FAU engineering students on their last year before graduating, Anthony and his collaborators have been able to build four bridges in South Africa.
It takes months and months of preparation from the design of the bridge, to organizing everything to perfection, and then embark on the long trip, to build the bridge. The team goes from Miami to London, then to Johannesburg, and then drive for hours across South Africa to Mbabane, and continue to Lakhaya where the last bridge was built in March 2025.
It seemed like an impossible task, this labor-intensive construction process, however, the last bridge built was completed in two weeks with the help of community volunteers.
"Kancane kankane" Little by little.
On a tattoo on his arm, Zachary has the word "Nomakanjani" - It must be finished.- He was also given the name Zakhele (Creator) Diamini.
We never think about it but just imagine having to walk three miles to school every morning, and three miles to go back home because you have to go around the river. Or think about the extreme sad reality of drownings because people try to go across the river. Makes you realize how fortunate we are, and the enormous impact these bridges make in the lives of so many.
Thank you, Anthony - Nkululeko (Freedom) Malendzisa - for sharing with us these exceptional achievements and labors of Love. YOU bring magic, to the Magic of Rotary.
Evelyn Trinidad-Toraño
Hallandale Beach-Aventura Club President
