Steve Baker was born and raised in Toronto, Canada. He graduated from the University of Western Ontario with a BA in Political Science. Soon after graduating, Steve met and married Peggy Belanger.
2001 marked a change in Steve’s life. Peggy accepted a posting in Caracas from her employer. Steve sold his business and moved with Peggy. During the five years he and Peggy lived in Caracas, Steve became involved with direct action charitable work. As a result of extensive travel in jungle areas and contact with the indigenous people who live there, Steve developed an anti-malaria project that bought and distributed life-saving bed-nets. While living in Caracas, he delivered 1,000 mosquiteros to the indigenous people of the Alto Ventuari River and its tributaries and a further 1,000 mosquiteros to indigenous people of the Caura River basin.
Steve & Peggy retired to Key Biscayne, Florida, in 2008, where Steve joined the Rotary Club of Key Biscayne. Working with 3 Rotary International Global Grants, Steve and his Rotary partners in Venezuela have delivered 75,000 life-saving insecticide-treated bed-nets to malaria hotspots in Venezuela.
Steve is currently working with RAM-Global, the Rotary anti-malaria action group.
